“I like to imagine that the world is one big machine. You know, machines never have any extra parts. They have the exact number and type of parts they need. So I figure if the entire world is a big machine, I have to be here for some reason. And that means you have to be here for some reason, too.” ― Brian Selznick
I just finished listening to a podcast on Don’t Quit Your Day Job with Cathy Heller who interviewed Martha Beck on How to Lead a Joyful Life. In the interview Martha explained how when she was writing one of her books she used to go to a local book store and surround herself with literally thousands of books. At one point she asked herself if it was really worth the effort, since, again, there were thousands of self-help books already out there? Of course, the conclusion was, and Cathy agreed, how much better the world was because she did not give up and contributed to the vast collection already in place.
This got me thinking about a comment Esther Hicks made that “we are all just an extension of the same life force.” Think of the metaphor of the sun as the life force and that we are all individual beams of light coming from that center. Now imagine if some of us or even many of us decide that the contribution we have to offer is not worth it – we are not worth it – then slowly but surely the beams would start disappearing and the sun would not be as strong because some of its energy would be taken away. Trust me – you are worth it – we are all worth it! We need to be confident in our ability to produce light since we are all just a unique beam from the same source.
When most people look up at the sun; they are not thinking, “wow that beam of light is really important and would you look at that ray of light over there – it’s not really that important!” Of course not, but some of us are quick to say that about ourselves. Each and every one of us is just as important in the sunbeams of life. My personal belief is that when we die our energy is just absorbed back into the center to continually help others shine down.
So, think about Selnick’s quote – your life has meaning, you are part of something much bigger, your contributions are important and valuable as are YOU! Celebrate your day and remember you are not an extra part, the world needs you and it is a much better, warmer, brighter place for you to be shining your light that is just YOU!
