Optimism
As a reminder, just as lighthouses are powerful lights used to avoid dangerous areas; lighthouse principles are powerful beacons to guide successful people in all endeavors in life. They rise above so that they can be easily detected and used to navigate any situation involving the specific principle.
If you choose to ignore the principle then you run the risk of running aground and preventing yourself from moving forward. You will find out how critical they are if you live your life in contrast to the principles. This is the seventh in a series of blogs that are dedicated to highlighting the 10 principles that spell out L-I-G-H-T-H-O-U-S-E:
• Listening
• Integrity
• Gratitude
• Honesty
• Trust
• Humbleness
• Optimism
• Understanding
• Strategy
• Empathy
Optimism is a discipline that is practiced daily and used to counteract negative reactions. Like Winston Churchill said a pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity and the optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. As a guiding principle, Optimism is a choice and becomes ingrained into the person’s way of dealing with everything and everyone. Optimism is about resiliency and about reminding yourself daily that good things happen to you everyday. It is about shifting your perspective and making a conscious choice of what you want to see and experience in your mind’s eye.
Optimists are happier and they are more successful in pretty much every way you can imagine. Academically, athletically, professionally, and socially—optimists do better. Also, they are healthier. This is not an opinion; there is a ton of scientific research that documents this. Optimism supports creative thinking and generating new ideas by distancing oneself from negative thinking which can hold you back. Optimism produces a tendency to act. Optimism supports persistence in a chosen course of action that is difficult, which speaks to being confident in oneself and one’s abilities.
Optimism facilitates bouncing back after a failure and refers back to being resilient emotionally, mentally and physically.
